Language and Tone Paper

Paper Guidelines:
Write a paper of at least 1200 words analyzing language as well as tone in any one of these stories: “My Jockey” by Lucia Berlin (Charters 89) or “Flying” by Alice Miller (download from above). Please note that the Alice Miller who wrote “Flying” is not the psychologist Alice Miller, so I don’t want to see papers that state that flying is a metaphor for abuse. It is not. There is really no reason to do any research on the author for this story. You are welcome to research the allusions in the story, but make sure to cite your sources.
Revisions are not allowed on this paper.
This paper should be at least seven paragraphs long.
The first two paragraphs should be modeled on your Central Idea Paper–the first paragraph should include a synopsis of the story and a statement of the central idea; the second paragraph should be a brief exposition of your central idea statement and an explanation of how the central idea applies to the story.
For the language section of the paper you will write three paragraphs where you will identify and discuss at least three of the devices of language identified in the “Language” chapter of Analyzing Short Stories. Pick three elements from this list– imagery, figures of speech, dialogue, symbolism, diction, irony, and syntax–and write one paragraph on for each language device. Identify each device (you can and should use the definitions provided in Analyzing Short Stories; however, make sure to cite if you do so), provide specific examples, and then write about how the use of each language device gives deeper significance to the meaning of the story. Include textual evidence and also make sure to explain how your analysis of language supports your interpretation (statement of central idea) of the story.
For the tone section of the paper, you will write one paragraph. In this paragraph, you will identify the tone of the story using one adjective respectively (review the tone worksheet for appropriate adjectives). You must then justify briefly why you believe this to be the tone by explaining how at least two elements of fiction (choose from

character, point of view, conflict, setting, and language) contribute to the tone in the story.
The last paragraph will be a conclusion that sums up everything you’ve discussed in the body of your paper.

The instructions given below need to be followed when writing this paper: The paper must be typed and have an original title.
The paper must be in MLA format.
The paper must be in MLA format. There have been updates to MLA citation conventions.

Do not include a separate cover sheet.
Use quotations.
Provide parenthetical page number citations when quoting or paraphrasing. Include a works cited page.
Revise and proofread for all grammatical and mechanical errors.
If you use external sources (this includes definitions from the textbook), make sure to cite clearly and properly using MLA conventions. Failure to do so is plagiarism, and you will be penalized.
