Please write a 3-page argumentative (750 word max.) paper about an artwork of Laocoön and His Sons
The point of your paper is for you to make an argument about the artwork. To make an argument, you need a debatable (i.e., not yet evident or plain) thesis statement, for which you will then showcase pieces of evidence that increase the plausibility of your thesis. For example: The body postures, symbols and use of chiaroscuro found in this image emphasize Mary’s role as mediator between the faithful observer and her Son in order to draw us into the mysteries of Jesus’s Passion. With such a thesis statement the reader would expect:
– in the introduction: the citing of the artwork’s title, full name of the artist, date and art historical period; the identification of the subject matter/brief introduction into what the artwork portrays; and your thesis statement
– followed by the body of your paper: organized into distinct paragraphs, in this example one devoted to body postures, the other to symbols, and another to chiaroscuro, in each of which you hone in on these specific themes and provide descriptive pieces of evidence from the image to support your claim, ie with regards to Mary’s role as mediator to draw us into the mysteries of the Passion
– a meaningful conclusion that is not only a repetition of what you have already written
The most important pieces of evidence, of course, are such ones you can see in the artwork if you were to take a closer look and draw interconnections. Hence, in the body of your paper, there should be a thorough description of the artwork – such as to make it possible for one not looking at the image to actually be able to imagine it. Provide as wholistic of a description in a structured and organized fashion as possible. In the end the reader should understand issues such as: How are the subjects arranged or grouped – and why? How are they bodily or figuratively proportioned – and to what avail? How are colors/brushstrokes used – and what meaning do you think they are trying to convey? What is the role played by the background? Etc.
Additional historical or analytic data about the artwork could be marginally helpful, but it is not required. Your own encounter with the artwork and how you can read the artwork is far more interesting than what an art historian might have to say. If you use external sources, though – such as museum guidebook entries – you need to meticulously cite them. If I see that you are working on the basis of, e.g., an entry from a museum’s website to which you are not giving appropriate citation, or if you are mentioning facts about the artwork that could not have been learned except through external sources which you are not citing, I will zero your grade for this assignment. The same will happen if you paraphrase from, e.g., a guidebook entry without distinguishing between your own commentary and the original source.
