Introduction to Literature Midterm
This exam has two parts. The first section asks you to define—in your own words—key terms we have encountered throughout the semester. I then want you to provide an illustrative example of each term from a text we have read, clearly stating how it fits with your definition. The second section involves an essay question. For each part of this exam, be sure to cite your sources. Please use a Word Processor for this exam and submit your documents no later than midnight, March 7th.
In this section, please select five (5) from the following list. Be sure to clearly define each term in your own words. Merely copying from the internet or our lectures won’t suffice. Then include an illustrative example from a text we have read, specifically showing how it represents your definition. (Note, you should use different works for each answer). Be sure to label your answers clearly. Each answer is worth ten points.

Essay question: In this section, please select one prompt from the following below. Your essay should be about 2-3 pages long, double spaced (roughly 500-750 words). Include relevant passages from our readings to support your ideas. Your essay is worth fifty points.
Over the last few weeks, we have explored a variety of pieces that fit within the Gothic tradition. Develop an essay in which you take two pieces from different gothic traditions (i.e. American Romanticism versus Southern Gothic or some of the other writers we read that fit in more broadly with the Gothic tradition), and show how they differ form each other. Answer why you think those differences exist in the text.
OR
While not purposefully, I see that many of the texts we have read deal with issues of race and/or gender. Pick two works that discuss one of these aspects and develop a clear essay that articulates how literature attempts to challenge the inequalities of either sexism or racism.
