In this week’s discussion, you talked about your feelings about the elderly and put yourself in their shoes thinking about being in a long-term care facility (LTC). For this activity, you will put yourself in the shoes of the healthcare professional working in that LTC. After reflecting, answer the following questions.
Geriatric HCP Role and End-of-Life Care
Write at least one paragraph that answers both questions (you may write one paragraph for each if you’d rather). Please take into account developmental theories. You do not need a reference as this is your opinion and reflection.
1. What do you see as the role of the geriatric healthcare professional or as someone who spends a lot of time with the elderly?
2. What is/could be your role in end-of-life care for the elderly? their family/significant others?
Compassion Fatigue
How do we take care of ourselves as we care for those at the end of their life’s journey? Compasssion fatigue can happen at any point in time given a multitude of situations. We are choosing to speak about it in the context of end-of-life care. This videpo TEDx Talk from 2018 is given by Francoise Mathieu who developed her theory of recognizing compassion fatigue and then providing self-care to work through it and re-energize. Recognition comes from identifiying with either the green, yellow, or red zone. You may shift between the zones as well. Knowing where you fall on the continuum can help you to recognize when you need to take time for self- care and family. It can also help you to provide better care for your clients and their families.
Please watch this informative video (approx. 17 minutes) and then answer the questions in at least one (1) paragraph:
3. Where do you fall on the continuum at this moment? (it does not need to be healthcare related. Ithink this also speaks to stress levels in life in general).
4. What do you do to care for yourself?
