Each student will be required to prepare a legal memorandum
on a topic of their choosing. However, the topic used for the debate paper may
not be used for the memorandum. Each topic will require prior approval of the
instructor before you begin the Memorandum.
Simply email the instructor and I will inform you of my position on your
topic. This memorandum will give the student an opportunity to argue a legal
issue that deals with health care and directly affects the management thereof.
The goal of this paper is to give the student an opportunity to put his or her
research techniques to work and also, use his or her analytical skills to break
down a legal topic and form a concrete argument, i.e., why the law supports his
or her findings. The paper will be 3-5 pages in length. APA, 7th Edition format will apply as will
all other written requirements, i.e., Times New Roman, 12 point font, and a
reference page.
Attorneys will often ask clerks (or associates) to prepare a
legal memorandum about a particular legal issue. This memorandum is used within
the law firm and serves to inform the attorney about the legal issue, and
includes citations to legal authorities. It will also point out a split of
authorities or ambiguities in the law, if applicable. It is important that the
attorney to whom the memo is addressed is informed of all aspects that are
relevant to the issue, not just information that is favorable to your side of
the case.
