Summary and Reflections (100 Points)
After completing Part I and Part II (Lessons #6 and #8), and having read through your articles, this
assignment is a compilation of completed work. In Part 1, you interviewed an individual; and in Part II
you did library research about that person’s culture. In this final assignment, you will summarize and
reflect upon the information. In this paper, you are to compare and contrast (differences and
similarities) between your interviewee’ background and yours.
Briefly summarize the findings of your research. Did these findings contribute to your understanding of
your interviewee and the cultural lens he/she views the world?
The information in Step 1 and Step 2 below are the research questions you answered in Part I and Part
II. Review and use to support your summary and reflections in Step 3.
Step 1: Summarize the Cultural Interview Information
1. What is your cultural origin or the culture which you identify?
2. What values come to mind that you particularly like or dislike about your cultural heritage?
3. Who would cite as positive role models, heroes/sheroes, or sources of inspiration in your
life? How come?
4. What does diversity mean to you?
5. What prior experiences have affected your current viewpoints or attitudes about diversity?
6. What societal contributions made by your culture would you like others to be aware of and
acknowledge?
7. What do you hope will never again be said about your ethnic or racial group?
Evaluate your interviewee’s responses
1. Answer the same questions for yourself. What do you think accounts for the
differences and similarities between your answers and those provided by your
interviewee?
2. Do you agree with your interviewee’s definition of diversity? Do you have a different
definition of diversity? Explain.
3. What invisible (e.g., educational background, geographic location, income, marital
status, parental status, religious beliefs and affiliations, or socioeconomic status, work
experience) and visible (e.g., age, ethnicity, gender, race, and physical attributes)
cultural elements were revealed during the interview?
4. What cultural patterns of thought, behavior, assumptions, values, and adaptations did
you discover from the interview about your interviewee and of yourself? Explain.
5. Identify differences in cultural styles, communication, decision making, problem
solving, and distress responses in your interviewee and yourself? Explain.
Step 2. Summarize the Library Research Articles
1. In Part II, you selected articles to learn more about the culture of your chosen interviewee.
Briefly summarize the information.
2. Discuss how this information contributed to your learning more about the culture of your
interviewee.
Step 3: Reflections and Summary:
1. What was your overall impression of this assignment? Was it valuable? Why or why not?
2. What, if anything, did you learn about your interviewee that was particularly surprising,
profound, inspiring, or enlightening?
3. Did this assignment alter your impression of your interviewee’s ethnic group? Why or why
not?
4. Did you learn anything new about yourself? Explain.
Directions for Writing Paper:
Format: Submit your assignment as one integrative essay, typed, and identified with your name, date,
and title (Part III: Intercultural Interview Paper). The paper should be double spaced, 12-point font, and
with 1-inch margins all around. Use Standard English (instead of language used for email, text
messaging, personal journaling, or casual conversation). There is a minimum of three pages; however,
there are no maximum length. The essay will be graded on the quality and clarity of your answers. As a
general guideline, you should expect to write approximately three 250-word pages. Please review the
Intercultural Interview: Summary & Reflections Grading Rubric to determine how your paper will be
evaluated.
Write an essay which has a well-developed introduction with a clearly stated thesis (purpose for writing
paper), a well-developed body with a paragraph for each major point or concept, and a conclusion
which is a fully developed paragraph. In addition, include a section to cite resources (choose one of the
format for citing resources from the Rio Salado Library website:
