On Page 9 of the reading on working with LGBTQ families, the author cites this central block from Markus & Nurius’s article: “…the pool of possible selves derives from categories made salient by the particular individual’s sociocultural and historical context and from the models, images, and symbols provided by the media and by the individual’s immediate social experiences.” LGBTQ parents struggle with understanding who their possible parenting selves could be because of attempts by the dominant culture to erase them or to deny their existence.
