**Prompt** About “Urban Indians,” the narrator of the prologue of Tommy Orange’s novel There There remarks that “We’ve been moving for a long time, but the land moves with you like memory.” Each chapter of the novel is told by one of the twelve main characters, each of whom has a particular reason for traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow.
Thus, the novel is concerned with movement, or mobility, which can refer to different kinds of movement: physical, social, technological, informational…etc. The term mobility can be applied to various concepts.
After reading the assigned keyword reading about mobility, use what you’ve read to notice different kinds of movement or mobility (or a lack of) in the novel.
This ssignment, then, is to compose a literary analysis research essay about Tommy Orange’s novel There There that is focused on the character of your choice and what that character represents with regard to the theme of “mobility.” The essay does not need to address every single aspect of mobility that is mentioned in the keyword reading; it should be sufficiently focused and discuss only those aspect(s) that are relevant to the character you have chosen to write about.
