Literary Analysis Through Reasoning
When analyzing text, one never starts with a conclusion in mind, but gradually arrives at one through
the gathering of evidence. Additionally, a conclusion based on effective reasoning can be true, but it
may not be the only truth.
In a literary analysis, one will need to present some type of argument or claim (thesis) based on the text
that is being analyzed. The essay will then support the claim through textual evidence, possibly
additional research, and your own experiences and/or observations.
Assignment: In our first essay, you will write a thesis driven essay that identifies, explains, and supports
your claim regarding William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Your claim will be inductively arrived upon
through the gathering of evidence that you complete inside and outside of class. Your thesis should be
based on a connection between two themes that you have identified within the text. Additionally, your
essay, needs to make a claim (positive or negative) for the play’s relevance in 2021. In other words, are
the themes and the way they are portrayed and/or executed relatable to a present-day audience?

Suggestions/Requirements:
Your thesis statement must address the prompt and provide a specific framework for your essay.
Effective prewriting, especially regarding your supporting points, will be crucial. Will you haveenough information for your entire paper?
Logical organization is important when developing an argument.
You will need to incorporate your selected readings through textual evidence. Textual evidencecan be provided through any of the following: direct quotation or paraphrasing.
The use of secondary sources can strengthen your argument. Utilizing research methods thatyou have learned in previous college courses, you may want find critical reactions that willcompliment your own analysis.
