Read Kelly Cherry’s “Alzheimer’s” poem. Notice that the poem uses contrasts–especially before and after–to characterize the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease. What evidence does the poem provide about what the man used to be like? What specific changes have come about? How does the setting of the poem suggest some of those changes? In what ways do the stabilities of the house, landscape, and other people clarify what has happened? Construct a 1000-word essay about the function of the poem’s setting.
In the essay, be sure to follow normal conventions like not using first person (I) or second person (you). There should be a thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph that mentions the three main points of the paper. Type the paper in Times New Roman 12 point font with 1″ margins on all sides. The type should also be double spaced.
