What is this assessment?
please make sure examples about Sicily or the Mediterranean where possiblee
A 900 word review of the appropriate scholarly writing and research on a specific topic. This should provide a commentary on the literature and include some key concepts, theories, and areas of debate. It does not need to be entirely focused on Sicily, but it would be sensible to use literature and examples about Sicily or the Mediterranean where possible.
What are the topics?
Choose ONE of the topics below:
1) Archaeology – The Ancient Greek (8th Century BC) pattern of human settlement around the Mediterranean including Sicily
2) Water quality – Human and non-human impacts on recreational water quality in Mediterranean and sub-tropical climates
3) Geology/geomorphology – The Geological History of the island of Sicily
4) Vegetation – Human impacts on soils, vegetation and landscapes of volcanoes
5) Science Communication – Science vs media: the way in which the media handle the science of volcanic eruptions (Etna and beyond)
6) Waste management – The impacts of waste and litter on the environment and public health in coastal environments
What is a literature review?
A literature review is a foundational element of all academic writing and research. It presents an account of what has been published on a topic by scholars and researchers. Typically, literature reviews form part of the introduction to a journal article or research report. The purpose of a literature review is to convey what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Therefore, there are two key elements to writing a literature review – 1) information seeking, and 2) critical appraisal of that information.
How do I get a good grade?
Any literature review must do these things:
• Be organized around and related directly to the issue you are exploring
• Be organized into themes or angles on a debate
• Synthesis results into a summary of what is known, and what is not known
• Identify areas of controversy in the literature
• Cite accurately, and cite often
• Formulate questions that need further research
What could get me a poor grade?
A weak literature review might:
• Only cover a few pieces of literature
• Simply discuss individual books or articles one after another
• Be organized by author name or date of publication, rather than a thematic organization
• Only describe and summarise, rather than critically appraising
• Be unselective, taking a seemingly random list of texts and ignoring influential ones
