To get started on this assignment, you must first locate an individual or family that has financial concerns and is willing to serve as the “client” on this project. You must work with a client that fit the realm of financial counseling rather than financial planning as differentiated in the first week of class. I prefer that you work with real people to experience the interpersonal dynamics of the counseling relationship and also so that you can go back and ask questions if need be. Written case studies or work with existing clients do not provide the same kind of experience as starting from scratch with a new person or family.
Confidentiality
The respondent’s identities must remain confidential. Therefore, use fictitious names and identifying information in the document you submit for grading. Please write the case study to insure that the respondents could never be identified. For example, do not use real names, addresses, credit card numbers, etc. Also, please make sure the respondents understand that you are a student and you are learning by working with them. You do not, and will not, have all the answers to their financial concerns.
Approach
You are to approach this case as a financial counseling professional. You will conduct an intake interview, collect financial information, identify options and make recommendations as appropriate. You must also reflect on your own skills using the Pulvino & Pulvino text as a guide.
FORMAT OF CASE STUDY
You should have four major sections included in your case study: (1) Narrative Description of the Person or Family, (2) Financial Information, (3) The Dynamics of the Sessions and the Client’s Future, and (4) Reflection of the Financial Counseling Experience. I ask that you also include a Table of Contents, Appendix, and Reference section.
e. Feel free to use computer software or online calculators as well – it’s your choice on what you like and what works best for you and your client’s situation. Specify the information that you requested from the client and their compliance (or lack of compliance) in providing the information.
