M2 Discussion 1: Images of ‘the19th Century Woman’

For the second post, on images that contradict the ideal women:
Review the chapter 4 Primary Sources sections on Prostitution in New York City, Mothering Under Slavery, and Early Photographs of Factory Operatives and Slave Women. Also, visit the following online resources:
Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers Project (Search specific topics such as “women” and “children” and “mother.”)
Valley of the Shadow
Write a post of about 250 words that:
Compares and contrasts the portrayals of working women and chattel slave women with those of the Godey’s woman.
Describes what these women’s relationships with the Godey’s women might have been like.
Reflects on how Godey’s Lady’s Book might have informed these women’s self-perceptions.
For the third post, please select a women’s magazine of our time, that has both American and international editions. Some examples include Glamour, Vogue and Essence.
Study the magazines and write a post that compares and contrasts the content of the present day portrayal of women with that of Godey’s.
In what ways, are the portrayals of women similar?
In what ways, if any, are the 21st century magazines more diverse in their portrayals of different women.
In what ways, did these portrayals differ between the American and international editions.
