As you know, we will use class toolbox discussions throughout this course to share with each other the social work skills you are learning about, using, and exploring through each module, the readings, and your experiences in the field.
In this module we will look at Dolores Jones, a case scenario in The Heights. Please locate her house in the Private Locations category of The Heights. Review her case and imagine that you are now getting ready to terminate with her. The childcare services and social supports she has needed have been put in place, her financial challenges and emotional challenges have been addressed as well as they can be at this moment, and your supervisor asks you to close out this case and your relationship with her. After working with her on very good terms in a warm and positive alliance for almost a year of home visits that included case management, information and referral, advocacy, assistance with the effects of institutionalized racism, counseling around her emotional state and challenges with parenting, you need to let her know that you will have only several visits with her left.
After reviewing Dolores’ case, please respond to the prompts below.
Learning further about termination issues and dynamics, how might you approach letting her know that you will be ending?
What specific emotional reactions might you anticipate from Dolores?
What emotional reactions might you experience?
What would you make sure to discuss in this termination phase of work?
