Assessment Description
Although the essay plan is not worth a lot for your overall grade, completing this gives you an opportunity to create a plan and get some feedback from the teaching team about your major essay. The total word count for the essay plan is approximately 400 words. Follow the following 3 steps to complete this task.
Step 1
If you have not done so yet, choose your essay question from the following list. Refer to the “Major Assessment Essay Questions Help.pdf”document provided for extra information on how you can tackle each question.
Review the following essay topics and by the end of Week 4, nominate which one you will focus on for the remainder of this assessment.
Essay Questions – Choose ONE
1. Crime & Deviance: Durkheim proposed that crime and deviance brought people in a society together. Choose an activity or behaviour that might be considered more deviant or less deviant today than it has been in the past (e.g., smoking, drink driving, abortion or same-sex marriage). Discuss the relevancy of Durkheim’s statement by using this behaviour or activity as an example.
2. Globalisation: COVID-19 has been labelled a ‘Global Pandemic.’ What kinds of change has this event had on globalisation?
3. Media: Choose a reality television show and discuss how your chosen show contributes to the discourse about race, gender or social class.
4. Education: Select one aspect of an Australian education policy and analyse how the policy relates to the relationship between education and social and/or economic benefits, referring to public or political debates around this policy.
5. Health: COVID-19 can be thought of as an event that reveals contemporary divisions in fundamental beliefs. Selecting a group who have opposed Australian government or challenged medical expert communication around the virus, examine what this tells us about shifts in faith in science and expertise. (i.e. enlightenment principles). What might be the value in a sociological perspective in addressing this?
Step 2
a) Develop three (3) keywords and three (3) search criteria that will help you locate references for the essay topic.
b) Using these search criteria, find five (5) journal articles and three (3) research monograph books that would contribute towards the completion of your essay.
The Course Textbook and provided references in the essay help document are NOT to be included as part of your literature review and references for the essay plan.
