Synopsis of topic: Based off of my perio case study, I would like to write my literature review on the management of hypertensive patients in the dental office. In relation to the case study, our patient is taking medication for her hypertensive condition that can affect the oral cavity and have dental implications that should be considered. The dental provider should be familiar with hypertensive medications that could potentially adversely impact blood pressure control and dental treatment. Cardiovascular conditions possess risk factors that may affect prognosis and guide treatment. Hypertension is known as the “silent killer” and about 17.3% of the 80 million U.S. adults with hypertension are undiagnosed (Southerland, 2016). Many factors are to be considered when treating a hypertensive patient and with further research, I will be able to determine the proper management as a dental professional and any adverse conditions that may be encountered.
