You have learned about the US, French and Haitian revolutions. But did you know years before the Americans declared independence from Britain, African escaped slaves from Jamaica to Suriname to Brazil and Colombia had been creating independent societies in the mountains and countryside, miles from the plantation and slave headquarters? This week you will write an essay. You will compare the Maroon notions of freedom and independence to what you learned about in Week 4.
Conduct your own research on African Maroon communities. They existed ALL OVER theCaribbean. I visited one in Colombia, South America, last year outside of Cartagena. First begin by really studying that slate.com website on the Atlantic Slave Trade in week 3. Look at all the places all over the Caribbean and the Americas where slaves were taken: Mexico; Brazil; Caribbeanislands–you get the point. Choose a few of those places and then do research on the history of African escaped slave communities in those places. There is a famous one in Mexico. Give us a 7 paragraph essay to compare and contrast notions of freedom in those communities with notions of freedom in the US, Haiti and France when they had their revolutions.
