1. Letter From a Birmingham Jail
The letter from the Birmingham Jail, was an open letter written by Martin Luther
King, Jr. in response to White clergymen who denounced the tactics of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which believed that the
battles for social injustice should be resolved in the courts rather than protests
and demonstrations in the streets. While King was imprisoned for leading
demonstrations in Birmingham, he responded in his letter, stating why and how
he and the other protesters did what they did. In essence, King outlined the Civil
Rights Movement’s defense by using logic and emotional appeal.
