Martin Luther King (MLK)

Guidelines:
As we have learned in lectures, good teachers have the ability to teach facts and dates in an interesting and objective manner. This assignment calls for you to prepare and present a five (5) minute informative speech about a person (biographical informative speech). You will utilize one of the organizational patterns and create a speech that highlights one biographical aspect of this person’s life (i.e. “The Books of Stephen King” as opposed to his life story). Your goal is to ENLIGHTEN the audience with objective information about this person. Make this information engaging and relevant, with information that we may not have known before. Make us want to Google search them after we leave class.
Steps to Complete this Presentation:
Think about a person that has importance. Not only in history, but also in your own life. Why is this person significant for the audience to know?
You select the person and topic (via Discussion board) and it is approved by me. Once a person is selected, they cannot be chosen twice. This goes for two people that want to do the same person but different theme.
Select an organization pattern that works best for yourself and your person
Look at COMM lab dates and/or my office hours to come in at least once to review the guidelines and ask questions as needed
Complete your main ideas
Find research that supports your main ideas. Find academic sources, but also important and relevant information. All information needs a proper citation at the end
Complete your outline and submit it before the deadline
Complete your visual aids
Practice your presentation
Determine your best mode of presentation (think of your: time, resources, availability, grade).
Record and present! Be confident in yourself and your presentation. If you completed all these steps, it should be a great presentation!
Details:
Research: You will be required to use two (2) research resources for the speech, two of which need to come from our library’s academic databases. One must be a book resource and one should be a research article. If you would like to use an additional article from an internet search you are allowed to use that as your third (and final) source.
Presentation Aids: You need some presentation aid to complement your information. Use something eye-catching, but not overwhelming. Make sure that we can see it on the screen. If using a PowerPoint, no words (except headings or direct quotes) are needed on any of the slides.
Notecards: For this presentation, before you begin you must show on video that you are using notecards. No reading directly off your outline during the presentation. You are not required to use notecards on the speech, it is highly encouraged.
