Instructions:
Completing the Laboratory: Before you start on this laboratory, we recommend that you first review the textbook chapter on mass wasting (and read this background material on slopes and mass wasting). Then, take a first visit to the virtual field trip on the Marcus Landslide in the McDowell Mountains. After you complete your first visit and fill in rough draft answers to the laboratory questions, you may want to return to the virtual landslide and review your answers. Of course, a real hike in the McDowell Mountains Regional Park to visit the landslide would be a great way to spend a weekend!
Grading Information: You will be graded on how well you answer the questions listed below.
Turning in the laboratory: You will notice a Word document that you can download on this Assignment. You can type up your answers into the Word document; to do this “save as” this page to your hard drive, and upload you answers to the dropbox on this assignment page.
Overview: The purpose of this laboratory is to give you a chance to learn about the transfer of matter and energy at Earth’s surface through exploration a local landslide. The laboratory write-up has three sections.
1. Is it a landslide? Telling the difference between landslide and bedrock.
2. What does it look like? Physical characteristics of a large landslide.
3. Why did it happen? Preconditions favoring failure and stability.
