Background: Stories about mental illness and its treatment appear in the media every day. Whether they focus on particular events (the Aurora, Colorado shooting), editorials (is Ritalin over-prescribed for children?), personal stories (celebrities’ struggles with addiction), or new research (are fish oils good for your mental health?), these stories carry messages to the public that influence how we view psychopathology and those who suffer from it.
Goals: The goals of this assignment are to engage your critical thinking skills and to challenge you to become a more thoughtful, informed consumer of information about abnormal psychology. You are asked to read media stories about topics in this area, think critically about what you read, and arrive at your own conclusions about the information presented.
Assignment: Search and select a media article, no more than 5-10 years old related to mental health issues presented, abnormal behavior, and/or research about abnormal psychology. Write an essay including your thoughts and conclusions about that article. Point out unusual behaviors, changes in behavior, and/or reasons for those behaviors. Your essay should be at least 6-8 paragraphs.
