-Mention of timing – is this an ongoing event, or is this something that happened on a specific date and time?

Choosing one topic in the news recently (can be a topic
that you already posted about in our class), I want you to go deeper on
news coverage of the issue. For this project, I want you to assume the
role of expert investigator. You will collect more information about the
topic/event, and also find more sources, taking a detailed look at how
different sources talk about this issue. This project takes a hybrid
approach to a media literacy topic, in that I want to know your
opinions, BUT I also really want your opinions to be grounded in cited
facts that you found. You need to have at least 5 media sources that you
are analyzing, and include a bibliography or list of references with
this assignment.

The project should be broken down into four main parts/headings that answer all of the listed questions:
(1) The Issue/Event [No first person]
-Detailed description of the phenomena or event being
investigated further, including background information that helps to
explain the importance of the issue.
-Mention of timing – is this an ongoing event, or is this something that happened on a specific date and time?
-Who it is affecting – people in the US? Young people? New Englanders? The world? And so on.
(2) Media Coverage [No first person]
-Does this issue get a lot of media coverage?
-What are the sources you are looking at specifically?
-Do the sources have different takes or frames for the story?
-Are there facts all stories agree on?
(3) Larger Context [No first person]
-Does this event, issue, or story fit into a larger
ongoing conversation we have as a society? For example, if you choose to
study something on COVID’s impact on housing security for Americans,
that would fit into a larger conversation we all have about
homelessness. Most events and topics fit into a larger conversation.
-Who are the people/parties directly involved in this issue? What is their hope or stance on the issue?
-Do other powerful groups (politicians, government, corporations, and so on) have a stake in this issue?
(4) Assessment [First person]
-Your assessed credibility of each source
-How this topic relates to you?
-Has your mindset changed since doing this deeper dive?
-Have you learned new things from this research?

All of this information should be delivered in:
(1) write a 3-4 page expert assessment paper on the topic
make sure that it is properly formatted with 12 point font, Times New
Roman, double spaced, one-inch margins. All of your outside sources
should be cited
