INTERNET OR OTHER NOTE SOURCES. REMEMBER, I KNOW MOST OF THE STANDARD ANALYSES
OF THESE PLAYS. RESPOND AS IF YOU WERE
THE FIRST PERSON WHO READ OR WATCHED THIS PLAY.
Please type a 4 –page, double

Using
the film based on the play by Josefina Lopez Real Woman Have Curves
write a sociological analysis. Please
type a 4 –page, double spaced, normal type size and margins, essay that
illustrates your grasp of Sociological Criticism. You will analyze this film/play
that seeks to promote values that, at least in the writer’s view, address a

This type of analysis must cover all aspects explained in the instructions to
this test written above.
1. One substantial paragraph or two.
Summarize the play after
presenting the title and the author, and
identify the social issue. To
focus your analysis I have given you the theme or general area of concern. Word
the issue as a question of what is right or wrong, fair or unfair, socially
acceptable, etc.
Examples:
“The Cuban Swimmer” questions
if family expectations are more of a burden than a support in achieving success.
The comedy “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez questions
if ethnic or cultural stereotypes serve some purpose in revealing the stupidity
of prejudice and bigotry.
2. Three or four paragraphs.
Where does the writer stand
on this issue? Discuss how the position of the writer on the issue is revealed
through the stage action. This may sound like a summary, but it is not a
summary.
How does the dialogue, the
characterization, the setting, etc. show us where the author stands on the issue?
Discuss which side the writer
is taking, what set of values he/she is promoting.
A good topic sentence to
introduce this section could be as follows: The
stage action such as character selection, dialogue, resolution of conflicts,
and how the play ends clearly reveals where the author stand on the issue of
_______________. (DO NOT USE MY EXAMPES IN YOUR PAPER.)
3. One substantial paragraph or two.
Includes a substantial
discussion on what the writer’s views/values imply in your society/community.
If people lived by those values, how would it affect you?
You will need topic sentences in each paragraph that
point to the direction of your discussion in that paragraph. I need to know
where you are. After your brief summary on Part I, do not continue to summarize or retell the plot; if you talk about
the plot it should be in support of a point you are making. This is called
alluding to the text.
A good topic sentence to
introduce this discussion could be as follows. The values promoted by the author are clear and can have significant
impact in our/my community/world. (DO NOT USE MY EXAMPLES IN YOUR PAPER.)
