Middle East Region Analysis

You have been assigned to the National Security Council staff. Read the 2021 Interim National Security
Strategic Guidance (INSSG). Your task is to review the document and provide an analysis
memorandum to the Deputy National Security Advisor that addresses the following items.
1. Select a country or region mentioned in the document (Middle East/ Saudi arabia). Begin your paper with an introduction
that concisely describes the most relevant aspects of the region’s/country’s strategic context.
This will include identifying, with justification, the most significant threats and opportunities to
U.S. interests associated with the selected country or region;
2. Of the objectives described in the INSSG for your region, assess and identify which are of
highest priority based on U.S. interests. Justify your prioritization based on relevance to serving
U.S. interests. Additionally, identify the primary instrument(s) of national power (DIME) that
should best be applied to advance these priority objectives, and briefly describe how they could
be employed to accomplish the recommended objectives;
3. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the overall strategic approach to your region/country.
Does the strategic approach seem coherent and viable? Do you think it properly aligns strategic
ends (aspirations) with available means (reality)? Are there any gaps or mis-alignments with
other lines of effort in the strategy; and
4. Conclude your memo with an identification of the most likely and significant leadership
challenges associated with pursuing the strategic objectives.

Format guidelines:
1. DoD correspondence guidelines will be followed (DoD Manual 5110.04, Vol 1, June 16, 2020 –
Section 7: Memoranda).
2. Use only Address and Subject lines at the top (no “Through” or “Attn” lines needed).
3. Use Times New Roman, 12pt font with single-spacing
4. Length: must be between 700 and 1000 words. Your paper should be primarily written in prose,
but some usage of bullets and sub-headers is allowed.
5. Use endnotes for citations (these will not count in your word count).
Notes: notes I’m from Saudi Arabia in the Middle East, so my doctor expecting me to mention Saudi Arabia specifically and the Middle East in general thank you.
