Answer each of these Five Questions in proper English paragraphs of at least 175 words. (That’s an average sized American-English Paragraph) There are no “formatting” requirements as such. Standard English Paragraphs are the format. If you use a quotation from the book a simple page number citation is fine. “(Pg. 92)” You don’t need to cite the author because all of your answers should come from material related to ONLY THIS BOOK. It’s not a research paper and I do not want material from other sources. I don’t care what some other historian, or editor says about this book I want YOUR answers to the questions.
1) Chapter 2: “I Consecrate My Life,” deals with Brown’s early commitment to the cause of abolitionism. And Chapter 3: A Warlike Spirit, discusses Brown’s desire to be a true activist for the cause. Which people and events helped inspire Brown to become an abolitionist? How was Brown different from some other leading abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison? Why does the author consider Brown to have a “warlike spirit?”
2) Chapter 4: “First Blood,” tells the story of John Brown’s activities in the Kansas Territory in 1856. What problem lured Brown to Kansas? What did he hope to achieve with his presence there? What happened in Kansas in 1856?
3)Chapter 5: “Secret Service,” deals with John Brown’s attempts to raise funds for a slave rebellion. Who were the Secret Six? How did they assist John Brown in his efforts?
4) Chapter 8 & 9 deal with the events at Harper’s Ferry Virginia in 1856. What happened at Harper’s Ferry? What was Brown’s plan? Was he successful? A failure? Why? When Brown was captured he was questioned several times. How did he respond to these inquisitors when asked about his role and his motives for the raid?
5) The trial of John Brown was a major event in the United States in the period just before the Civil War. How did Brown use the trial to further his cause? What was it about Brown’s speeches and accusations that made him a martyr and a hero in the eyes of many Americans?
