Midterm US Essay

Two of the following will appear on the actual test. It is recommended that you study for at least three of the four essays below to be properly prepared. Each essay has questions asking for your opinion and for facts. You will need to write a minimum of five paragraphs with four-six sentences each, during the exam to answer the question
1)Discuss the overall relationship between the Native Americans and the new settlers during the 19thcentury. What were the goals of each side? What was life like for the Indians? What was life like for the settlers? Why did the settlers move west? Do you think they understood each other or do you think that they did not? Why do you think the two groups did not get along? What are some of examples of their relationship good or bad? In the end why do you think the indians were defeated and their resistance crushed? Why did the settlers end up the winners of this less then friendly battle for supremacy? Why was there a battle for supremacy and what were they fighting for? There are names that can be mentioned as well as places. You are expected to have a well-thought-out thesis statement, and an introduction, body, and conclusion.
2)What was so important about the Gilded Age? Where did the name come from? Why is the name the Gilded Age, so perfect for this time period? What happened during this time period? There were social, political and technological changes you can discuss, just to name a few. Overall what is your opinion about the Gilded Age? Was there anything that stuck out as being more important than other things in regards to the major changes occuring in the United States? Do you think ourcountry benefited from these changes? Why or why not? There are names that can be mentioned as well as places. You are expected to have a well-thought-out thesis statement, and an introduction, body and conclusion.
3)What is the Progressive Era? Discuss the attributes of the Progressive Era including what it is and the core tenants of this era. Why is it an era and not a movement? Who were the progressives and what did they do? Did they accomplish anything? What was the government’s role during the ProgressiveEra? Did they help or hinder the reform? Give specific examples. Finally why did the Progressive Era end? There are names that can be mentioned as well as places. You are expected to have a well thought out thesis statement, and an introduction, body and conclution.
4)Discuss World War I. What started the war? Look at the events that occurred in Europeand also what events led to America’s involvement in the war. Did President Wilson achieve his goals during the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles? What was the post-war reaction in America? Be sure and name key battles and specific dates such as the turning points during the war. Also, be sure and discuss notable people involved as well as places. You are expected to have a well thought out thesis statement, and an introduction, body and conclusion.
