Explain & critically evaluate Mill’s argument about the ‘competent judge.’ Has he convinced you that there are ‘higher’ pleasures?
Aim for about 3 pages. First (1), explain Mill’s argument, then (2) critically evaluate it. Your primary text for this paper is Mill’s book Utilitarianism (also Sandel’s essay, my comments, handout, etc). Next week we have some materials about how to write philosophy papers, and I’ll also be posting content on writing.
