Every college student needs to understand and be able to use the MLA format system. MLA stands for Modern Language Association and represents a system for doing research papers– a set of rules that have been established for how an academic paper should look. For this assignment, you will be asked to complete an MLA research works cited page, placing each author in their alphabetical place and citing the research they did. Remember, the cookie jar rule. The cookie (smaller research item) goes in quotation marks, while the cookie jar (the journal or book) is placed in italics. Think in terms of bigger and smaller. If your research is smaller (a chapter from a book) it goes in quotation marks while the book itself (the cookie jar) goes in italics. A newspaper is the cookie jar. It goes in italics.
