Writing Requirements, Expectations, and Grading
Research Skill Learned: The connection between genes and development.

Journal Part 1: First, watch the following video and read the two articles listed here as well as your Professor’s lecture video and the videos in the Study Hall.

Teather, D. (2002). Lesbian couple have deaf baby by choice. Retrieved from https://www.theguardian.com/world/2002/apr/08/davidteather
Ghose, T. (2014). Children to order: The ethics of designer babies. Retrieved from https://www.livescience.com/44087-designer-babies-ethics.html
Yankek, D. (2020). 16 quirky traits you didn’t know you have. Retrieved from https://www.thehealthy.com/bodies/quirky-traits-you-didnt-know-you-inherited/
Part 2:
Design your own pretend baby by giving it some personal traits listed in the table below. For example, how intelligent would you design your baby to be? How tall and healthy would your baby be?

Place your traits in a table. From the textbox toolbar, select to insert a table and list the traits that way.

Table of Traits:
Intelligence (Low, average, high) Personality such as outgoing or conscientious (pick your personality traits) Religious or spiritual or not
Physical attributes (height and weight) Athletic ability (athletic or not or energetic or not) Health (healthy or any disabilities)
Part 3:
For one of the traits you listed, using information from research articles and studies, explain what one factor in the baby’s environment might be “strong” enough to actually alter the trait gene or cause the gene expression to alter by the way the gene is read. In your answer, explain what that factor is with detail. For example, if you choose to write about how one’s diet and poor nutrition can alter the way a gene is read and expressed, list specific things in one’s diet and what it is about the diet. You may have to do some more research to discover that.

Part 4:
With the use of the course textbook and what you have learned, what would be your argument for a couple who wants a designer baby so that the baby has an athletic talent or some other super talent? In your explanation, you are to discuss what the research tells us about the nature and nurture debate. Consider that the environment can and does interact with the genes or genetic coding. Your explanation should at minimum show an understanding of the interaction between nature (genes) and nurture (one’s environment).

Part 5:
Explain in a short paragraph how what you learned this week about genetics is important to understanding development?

Requirements:

Page Length: Your answer will need to be about 1 page in length to properly discuss and explain your argument fully and with science.

APA formatting

Use the course textbook directly to develop and support your answer and cite and reference it in APA style
