Professor’s instructions (comments)
– Completely avoid using the first person pronoun (“I”) as well as the second person pronoun (“you”) in formal writing assignments. That applies for all formal written assignments for this class (but not to the discussion boards).
– Check indentions on Works Cited entries. Second and subsequent lines need to be indented. Some of you inverted the indentions, so be sure to check that as well.
– Aim for an original, interesting title. Not just “Education” or “Essay 1” or the like.
– Aim for 2 – 3 paragraphs per page. Some of you had ONE paragraph for the entire paper. That’s impossible to read.
– Indent all paragraphs. Some of you neglected to do this.
– Please work on eliminating the following serious errors.
Comma splices (using a comma instead of a period to separate two sentences)
Run on sentences (note: a run-on sentence has nothing to do with the length of a sentence)
Faulty possessives (e.g. it’s “Rodriguez’s essay,” not “Rodriguez essay”)
Misused words (e.g. there/they’re/their; its/it’s; your/you’re)
– You must engage the readings in a thoughtful and substantive way. Just having a couple of small quotations doesn’t cut it for that. Engage the reading. Show me you’ve thought about it.
– Check the centering of your paragraphs. Do not center the paragraphs. Only the title. Be sure that the paragraphs are left-justified.

– Does the paper contain sustained engagement with one (and only one) of the assigned readings for this module? Keep in mind that while this is a summary and response essay, the bulk of the essay should be response.
Answer: Yes, the summary and response portrayed effectively. I would encourage being clear about which reading you’re responding to since the essay is meant to be for someone with no knowledge about this topic.
– In two – three sentences, summarize your overall impression of the paper. List strengths and weaknesses and any specific suggestions for inprovement.
Answer: They displayed their summary part of the essay effectively and overall discussed good points about liberal education. The author which they are responding to should be included in order for the reader to know which reading they are responding to.
