It wasn’t that long ago that coal-fired power plants generated over half of the electricity in the United States. Now, more electricity is generated by burning natural gas than coal. In some months, coal is also outpaced by renewables. Some coal advocates have claimed that there is a “war on coal” and it is essentially being regulated to death. Regulations limiting, or proposing to limit, SO2 emissions, mercury emissions, fine particulate matter emissions, ash disposal and carbon dioxide emissions, to name just a few, have made coal uneconomic, say the coal advocates. Other, more market-oriented analysts, say that low-cost natural gas (from fracking) and low-cost renewables (benefiting from subsidies such as the Production Tax Credit) have made coal less competitive. There is no doubt that the generation of electricity from coal is in decline in the United States.
What is your view on the cause of the decline? Please explain your answer.
