Module 2 – Case Study: The Solomon Asch Experiment

In 1951, researcher Solomon Asch carried out a social experiment on group pressure and social conformity (the image above portrays the original experiement). Over the years, this experiement has been replicated and found to be an authoritative source of knowledge about individual reactions to group pressure. The following video describes the experiment and its results. Your textbook also includes a description of the experiement on page 130. INSTRUCTIONS: After watching the video and reading the description of the Solom Asch experiment on page 130 in your textbook, answer each the following questions in 1-3 paragraphs. For full credit answers must respond to questions comprehensively with relevant examples and/or arguments. 1. What did the Asch experiment attempt to answer? Describe what was done as part of the experiment and its variations. How did the results change based on the experiment variations?

2. Based on your own observations and class materials, what factors increase the likelyhood that an individual will conform to group pressure?

3. Mention and describe two notable examples (from history, current events, case studies, etc.) in which group pressure was a key element in an individual’s decision-making process?

4. Compare and contrast the Milgram and Asch experiment. What kind of insights do these experiments reveal about the role of group and social conformity in contemporary social life?
