peers post (Although most would consider pregnant women on drugs to be written off or being told they shouldn’t be doing this, practicing harm reduction in the medical field this could help the unborn child not be exposed to HIV. Although most nurses who work in the harm reduction field have seen drug-ridden people come into the ER, there is more to treating them like “garbage.” With a higher risk for women who will be exposed to sexual abuse, depression, HIV, and STD, we can help make sure they are not labeled or pushed through a system without trying “fix” them, which may cause more harm than good.
Understand that most people have the best intention to have things like money to buy food and have a roof over their head, but something was introduced or something happened to them that may have caused this. Treating someone first like they are humans, for example talking to someone instead of yelling at a homeless man “to get a job” is a start. I don’t believe the issue is in the staff of the healthcare industry but rather in the red tape of bureaucracy. Most people who work in the healthcare industry love to help people, unfortunately, being labeled as a drug user might lend the healthcare companies to deny them basic healthcare.
There are so many things to get people involved, but there is some moral issue I feel might come up. So those who may feel like they are forced to seek a place in line in heaven would be doing it for selfish reasons. I think one thing that may help is starting a program in the schools at a younger age to help expose this to everyone. When my kids were small we volunteered a lot in “safe” places like the church picnics. As they got older I realized that I wanted to get them more exposure to a world out there, so we started doing missionary work with the church. Now I knew that this would not give me a place in heaven but it made it more real to help those in need and humanize those around us. I will say one of the things that helped get my kids on board might have been my excitement for wanting to do it and the fact I didn’t stop talking about it for days after I got back. I believe someone’s excitement is more infectious than just someone telling you about it.
I believe the program theme would center around ethics. This draws a strong line in understanding that if our morals don’t line up with our ethical practice we would be hypocrites and then we would be unable to help others. Also, we would ethical need to make sure people are safe before turning them out into the world.
