Step-by-Step Plan:
For the introduction:
Use the introduction techniques discussed in class. Be creative for your introduction!
Introduce the Wake Tech Reader essay. Include the author name, the date of publication, and the publication title.
Conclude the introduction with a thesis statement that announces if the author was successful at conveying his or her main message.
For the first body paragraph (writing the summary, 10% of paper):
Use the summary techniques discussed in class. Report the text’s main purpose and supporting ideas
Use author tags like “he states” and “he shows”
Do not rely on quotations in the summary
For the remaining body paragraphs (writing the response, 90% of paper):
Your response should answer the question: Was the author successful at conveying his or her main message for the intended audience?
Analyze the author’s techniques; do not get sidetrack by only responding to the content. How does the author construct the argument?
Purpose: Are the text’s aims clear and organized?
Audience/Reader: Will the intended audience accept the author’s claim?
Thesis/Main Ideas: Do the main ideas support the thesis? Which examples are especially convincing and why?
Organization & Evidence: Did the author support his or her contentions in a logical order? What type of evidence did you find convincing? Refer to specific moments in the text for evidence
Language & Style: Did the tone and style support the author’s purpose?
Do not go on a tangent about how the essay relates to something you’ve experienced. For the response section, keep the lens only on how well you think the author is delivering his or her purpose by analyzing the technique
For the conclusion:
Repeat the thesis statement in a new way
Mention the so-what factor, or the big lesson/takeaway from the essay
Leave the readers with a final, engaging line
