The Response Essays must use APA or ASA formatting for in-text citations and reference list and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. The assignment should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font. Furthermore, the assignment should be between 2-3 pages in length, with one-inch margins on all sides and page numbers. Please do not vary your font, font size, spacing, or punctuation in an effort to overcome the length requirement, as this is readily apparent to your instructor. Write with purpose. Each sentence should contribute to your overall writing (no fillers like very very very very interesting). Additionally, you should use the same glossary of terms that the readings’ authors use; do not make up your own descriptors or tell the reader “Basically…” Your tone should be literal and formal using proper English spelling and grammar. Do not use clichés, text speak (e.g. ROFL), emoji, non-text characters, or non-scholarly sources. You should write in paragraphs which are organized to fit together. You will need at least two sources (one can be your textbook).
Response Essay #1
Choose a movie or TV show you think highlights a deviant occupation. It needs to be something you’e seen. Don’t use documentaries or reality TV. The premise needs to be fictional. Give a brief description of the movie/show and what deviant occupation it highlights. You will want to highlight any stigmas addressed, the tone of the film/show, and how the occupation is viewed by the other characters. Tell of any missing stigmas. Discuss how realistic/non realistic the film/show’s approach to the deviant occupation is. Compare how the film/show presents the occupation to what sociologists/academic journals say.
For example: If you chose Six Feet Under, you would describe the show, tell how they portray funeral homes/directors. List any stigmas the show addresses. Describe the show versus the reality of funeral directors. Tell of any real life stigmas that are not portrayed in the show. Describe what your sources say about funeral directors.
