In contemporary western cultures, marriage tends to result from romantic/love relationship strictly between the partners. However, in many non-western cultures (in Asia and Africa), marriage is often arranged by the parents/families of the couple.
What would you consider to be the relative advantages and disadvantages of both romantic and arranged marriages? Statistics show that divorce rate is less than 5% in arranged marriages compared to 50% in romantic marriage in the U.S. – how would you explain this low divorce rate? Do you think arranged marriage could ever become widely practiced in a western society such as the United States?
