SOME GENERAL WRITING POINTS FROM THE PROFESSOR
1. The title of a musical work should be stylized with italics, not quotation marks.
For example, Symphony No. 5 is correct, whereas “Symphony No. 5” is incorrect.
Titles of individual movements within larger works don’t need to be italicized.
2. The length of a piece of music typically isn’t worth mentioning, unless it’s unusual
for some special reason. For example, Renaissance Masses were commonly 20 to 30 minutes
long, so mentioning that a specific Renaissance Mass is 25 minutes long isn’t insightful. On
the other hand, Beethoven’s Symphony
No. 3 was twice as long as any previous symphony,
so its length was notable and historically relevant.
