Choose a publication that you want to write for. Peruse a copy of the
magazine/journal online and find an example of a music review within it.
Write a one page, double spaced response to this review in which you analyze
the characteristics of the writing in the publication. (i.e. tone, audience,
writing style, criteria, and justifications).
Think about the rhetorical situation of this particular publication and
answer the following questions:
Do they use first person or third person?
Who is their primary audience? (Do not say everyone—no publication is for
everyone).
Do they speak formally or casually?
Does the publication publish humor or not?
What are the criteria of the article?
What kind of research did they use in this article?
Give an example of descriptive writing from the article that was strong.
Post the link to your review within your response on Blackboard. For your
review, you will be attempting to write to the specific audience of your
publication using the tone and style of the publication you chose to write for.
Assignment 1.3: First Draft
In this assignment, write a review of a music album for the specific publication
you’ve chosen. It can be a current album or not. Conduct formalized research
about the origins and history of what/who you have chosen to review as well as
the publication you have chosen to be writing for. This focus should assist you
in making rhetorical decisions about your writing as far as audience and tone
and ensure that you include research information that helps to guide the
context of listening to this art/artist. The article may be in first or third
person, as long as it adheres to the publication style you chose. At the top of
your essay, clearly state what publication you are writing for and who the
audience is. The article should have a thesis that evaluates the strengths or
weaknesses of the album, strong descriptive writing, and clearly articulated
criteria that are justified through specific examples. The article should be 3-5
pages in length, double-spaced. You will have peer reviews on this draft to
receive revision guidance.
Assignment 1.4: Final Draft
Revise your working draft (Assignment 2.3) using the strategies discussed in
class. I expect a substantial revision that addresses your draft in terms of
organization, language, voice, and development of ideas. You will have peer
reviews and you may meet with me one-on-one in conference to discuss your
working draft before you revise, and you may also meet with a tutor to assist
you in revision. The final draft should be 3-5 pages in length, double spaced.
