“My Community” Written Report

Overview

The idea with this project is to create a plan that will help you to identify and define a community. So far, the readings are about the historical events that have shaped Chicanas/os since the era of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s. Perhaps, you have observed key aspects that helped some Chicanas/os to stick together for the same cause or to advocate for the same reasons.

Identify and define the community.
Students are aware of belong to a one-or-several communities. Individually, you will identify your community and give it a name, for example: “The San Diego Mesa Latinox,” “Las Mujeres Hispanas,” “The Raza Cultural Organization”, “Chicanox/group”, or The Aztlán Association. The selection of your community not necessarily has to be a real community. It could be an imaginary community in which you believe you can identify. However, it is also the choice of creating a real community in which you are a member that includes the mission to serve the cause of any social, political, or economic Chicana/o community. Remember that a community helps to bring people together and support each other in the fight to overcome those struggles.

Identify and explain one main issue that the community faces.
After you have identified and define your community explain one main issue (problem) that the community is facing, for instance: gender inequality, racism, behaviors of colonialism (Latino incarceration rates, anchor babies, students of color with disabilities just to name a few) problems of diversity within the academic curriculum in higher education, access to higher education, Chicano/a students in campus, etc.

The problem could be identified as a very specific problem (issues of gender equality at Walmart) or even a subjective like (behaviors of colonialism at UCSD). Explain the causes of the problem and how is positively or negatively affecting your community. Write 3 pages and discuss how would you suggest a “Plan” to solve the issue or issues of your community.
Craft your ideas in a “Plan” to talk about the issue (remember to identify the issues of the community.)
If you choose a real community describe the aspects that have shaped your community through life experiences.
Describe who is taking role in the community and who is not.
Discuss the steps that you need to take to fulfill the “Plan”. Let’s remember just as an example, the steps that Chicanas/os made possible for the creation of “The Plan Espiritual de Aztlán” which was drafted at the Denver youth Conference in 1969. The plan was a philosophical document that inspired Chicano activists to establish a nationalistic vision for the movimiento. I do recommend to look up for this document so that you can have an idea on how the plan was drafted.
There is another example called, “Plan de Santa Barbara” which will offer some tips on how to draft your plan too.
Write the paper in MLA style format.
Make sure you use two academic sources to validate your opinions or content support.
Gather all the information and create a video and present your Plan in an Oral Presentation.
