“Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson, “Why Did Democracy
Spread?” by Francis Fukuyama, and “Islam and Democracy “by Benazir
Bhutto. These essays discuss the founding, growth, and spread of
American democracy. In a Definition essay of three full pages, define
American Democracy using the three readings as sources for quotes to
include in your essay. Topics for discussion may include:

You
may use and develop any number of the topics listed above as long as
you can link the topics together into an organized essay that uses
quotes and commentary (explanation) to defend your thesis.
Your essay must include the following elements:
A properly formatted first page: name block, centered title, page number: “Smith 1”, and begin first paragraphs of your essay.
Name block and title only on the first page. (See page samples in Pages Tab in Canvas)
Times New Roman or Calibri 12 font, 2.0 spacing throughout, left justify, one-inch margins on all four sides, and no bold
Three
full pages of text and a Works Cited Page with an entry for each of the
three essays used as sources for quotes. (See MLA Style Guide and
Sample Works Cited Page in Pages Tab in Canvas).
Introduction Paragraph:
An
Introduction Paragraph of at least ten sentences including background
information (importance of American Democracy) and your thesis for the
definition of American Democracy.
Thesis Example:
American Democracy includes laws and taxes approved by citizens, elected officials, independent judges, and trial by jury.
Place your thesis as the last sentence in Introduction Paragraph and highlighted in yellow.
Body Paragraphs:
Several
body paragraphs of at least ten sentences each. These paragraphs use
quotes with MLA citations as evidence to support a section of the
thesis. Start the paragraph with a sentence or two introducing trial by
jury as an important part of American Democracy.
Quote Example:
Jefferson
states the importance of trial by jury, “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx” (92). No extra spaces after each quote. Follow
this quote with several sentences explaining the quotes meaning and
relationship as a part of American Democracy. This paragraph develops
the idea of trial by jury as a part of American Democracy as noted in
your thesis. Remember to put your body paragraphs in the same order as
the sections of your thesis. (laws/taxes, elected officials, independent
judges, and trial by jury)
Conclusion Paragraph:
A Concluding
Paragraph where you may re-state your thesis, tie all of your discussed
elements of American Democracy together, and bring your essay to a
close. Include an entry for each of the three quoted essays from World
of Ideas. Alpha order these three entries by the essay author’s last
name, for example J for Jefferson.
Works Cited Page Entry Example:
Jefferson, Thomas. “Declaration of Independence.“ World of Ideas, edited by Lee
Jacobus, Bedford, 2020, pp. 89-96.(1 tab indent for lines after the first in each
entry)
Works Cited Page should be titled as Works Cited Page (Centered the first line). Page number: Smith 4.
Works Cited Page entries should be in alpha order by essay author’s last name. Example: J for Jefferson.
