Direction and requirements
Your assignment is to write a paper in which you offer a narrative analysis of one of the films listed above. You are to give an account of how this particular film goes about the process of telling its story. You should utilize at least one of the principles outlined in Chapter Three of Bordwell and Thompson’s Film Art. These concepts include: causality, plot and story, motivation, temporal order, temporal duration, temporal frequency, narrative space, beginnings and endings, patterns of development, range of narration, depth of narration, and hierarchy of knowledge. You might also make reference to the principles of classical Hollywood cinema narration. You might isolate a single scene and discuss how it is motivated within the context of the whole film. You might examine the pattern(s) utilized in getting the plot from beginning to end. You might examine the nature of the closure that is reached by the film. You might trace the narrative’s flow of information. Perhaps the most often chosen approach for this assignment is to explicate how the scrambled and complex narratives of these films operate finally to convey their meaning. How does their structuring of narrative time ultimately make sense? These are just a few possibilities. You might refer to the list of questions at the end of Chapter Three in your text to help you formulate your paper. Whatever your choice, you are to demonstrate your command of film narrative and narration as well as of the film you have chosen. Remember that your stance should always be argumentative even though you are primarily offering analysis and explication. You are encouraged to consult secondary material such as film reviews and criticism, but remember to give proper attribution for these sources according to MLA guidelines. This paper should include a one-page plot segmentation of your film attached to the end of your paper as an appendix. This paper should be at least five (5) double- spaced essay and 1 page plot segmentation of the film.
