As we have seen from our readings, writers do not have to approach an argumentative essay with stated “positions”; often, writers feel they can convey their feelings/ideas more effectively by narrating an event/telling a story. For this essay, choose a “learning” experience that changed you (as a participant, or as an observer). You will choose an experience that involved some
conflict or controversy. You will describe/narrate the event, and your position on the controversial issue should be clearly understood, even if your stance is implied and not explicitly stated. You will also include a “refutations” paragraph on the topic. In choosing your topic, consider negative experiences, those that involved anger, fear, or humiliation (you could then
“argue” how something should be changed/done: e.g., peer pressure, foster care, hazing, addiction, euthanasia, violence, body image, substance abuse, etc.).
