Narrative Essay about food

For this essay, I’d like you to tell me a story about your life that involves food. It could be your experience trying food from another culture, growing food in a garden, or even just sharing a special meal with someone. Take inspiration from Chang-Rae Lee’s essay, “Coming Home Again” to write about a significant moment/time in your life where food played a role.

The essay should be driven by details, particularly the specific details from the day/moment that help you to tell this story. Your goal is to paint a picture of this event. If you witnessed a beautiful sunrise write about it in detail; include how the sun felt on your face that morning, or how scratchy the tag on your shirt was against a sunburn from the day before, or how the birds in the morning sounded in the trees. Put your reader in the moment with you.

Your essay should include sensory details. How does the food smell, taste, look? What are the sounds of the food cooking, or the garden where it came from?

Remember, a narrative is a story, and this story does not need to be of earth-shattering importance for it to be significant or have meaning in your life. Often small choices or brief encounters can have a larger impact. Tell your story using descriptive detail. Your job is to show your reader what this experience has shown you, and also to convey the importance of this experience (you can think of this as your thesis.) In other words, why are you writing about this experience instead of another experience?

Some things to think about:

Give some thought to your purpose. Why are you writing this narrative? Your essay needs to do more than just tell a story; it needs to make a point.
Ask yourself, why is this moment significant? What is the meaning?
What methods should you employ to tell this story? Who was involved? Will you use dialogue? Where will you start the story? Will your reader need background information?
The essay should be 3-4 pages (double-spaced, in size 12, Times New Roman or similar typeface.) Please include a title.
