Narrative Therapy Case Study

Hello. My case study assignment is for my Family Systems therapy class. The assignment asks that we use 4 sources that are no older than 2018 and we incorporate the importance of clients “stories” in the narrative therapy process

Margaret and Claudia, a self-identified lesbian couple, are fostering/adopting 2 children from a County adoption program. They are required to seek family counseling as part of the adoption process. The children are siblings, two boys ages 2 and 3. The boys were removed from their birth family 1 year ago due to severe neglect and child endangerment. During your intake session with the couple present only, you discover that Margaret was raised in a foster home due to sexual abuse in her family of origin. She claims to have overcome the trauma she endured. Claudia was raised in an intact family but reveals that her father was a physically abusive alcoholic. Both Margaret and Claudia deny having a substance or domestic abuse problem, though you detect the odor of alcohol on Margaret’s breath.
In the second session, the children are present. While observing the family interact, you notice that Margaret keeps interrupting Claudia and criticizing what she says as ‘stupid’. Claudia shuts down and allows Margaret to explain her thoughts and feelings for her. The children start to laugh and call Claudia ‘stupid’, mimicking Margaret.
