Meaningfully compare and contrast characters from either or both of the assigned short stories: “The Birthmark” and “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Did you sympathize with them? Why or why not? What is instructive about their similarities or differences? What do these differences tell us about each respective character or about Hawthorne’s general themes?
Describe how Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbols, imagery and language to complement the themes associated with Dark Romanticism in at least one of the assigned stories this week.
