Nationalism and Industrial Revolution

This is a three-page essay; you can go over a bit, but try to write at least three pages. You may write a bit more formally here. Include an introductory paragraph that offers a thesis, i.e. some idea of what your main argument will be in the essay. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that gives the main idea/argument of each paragraph, and make sure that you organize your writing in such a way that each paragraph is fully exploring one of the components of your argument.

You may bring in material from the lectures and the Marks work. This is an essay that allows you to reflect on the idea of ‘nationalism’ and how it has been developed historically. There are potentially a number of different ways to answer the question, but I’m offering the following two question prompts to get you started. You may agree, disagree or a bit of both in each case. Just make sure that you support your answer with some historical examples, and try to look at all the relevant material in both the lectures/powerpoints and the Marks reading. Don’t just paraphrase the material from one or two pages. Here are the question prompts; Agree or disagree (or both) with JUST ONE of the following statements. No matter which you choose, try to give a brief definition of nationalism and how it was constructed historically:

1) “Nineteenth and Twentieth Century world historical events show that encouraging patriotism/nationalism in the populations of nation states was mostly a harmless process.”

2) “Industrialization and Nationalism frequently happened at the same time in nation states starting in the nineteenth century, but the two things were not really connected.”
