Reflect: Think about what you may have inherited from your biological parents and ancestors. Become familiar with the terminology related to genetics such as chromosomes, genes and DNA. Become familiar with the different categories of genetic disorders – single-gene disorders, chromosome disorders, multifactorial inheritance disorders
1a) Write: Figure 3.3 on page 76 in your text explains the genetic transmission of eye color (dominant and recessive genes). Review the chart and then assess your own family. What color are your eyes? What color are your parents eyes? What color are your siblings eyes? Using the chart in Figure 3.3, identify the dominant and recessive genes in your family and then figure out the genetic transmission of eye color in your family. What is the outcome?
1b) Write: In your own words, briefly describe single-gene disorders, chromosome disorders, and multifactorial inheritance disorders. What role do genetic testing and counseling play in identifying, preventing, and treating these disorders?

Reflect: This chapter covers and extensive amount of important information essential to understanding child development. As you read the chapter and watch the videos take pay particular attention to:
the sequence of development during the three stages of prenatal development.
the various risks and health issues for both mother and fetus during pregnancy.
the sensitive periods in fetal development (see figure 4.5 on page 112).
the risks to the developing fetus when the mother smokes, consumes alcohol, or uses drugs during pregnancy.
2a) Write: Identify the three stages of prenatal development. In your own words, briefly describe the development that occurs in each stage.
2b) Write: Identify common taratogens and explain how each one may have a negative affect or cause harm to the the developing fetus. Identify sensitive periods in prenatal development. What part of the developing body of the fetus may be harmed when the fetus is exposed to teratogens between 3 and 8 weeks of pregnancy? What part of the developing body of the fetus may be harmed when the fetus is exposed to teratogens between 9 and 16 weeks of pregnancy?
2c) Write: What is the newborn baby capable of doing at birth? How do newborns function and what threatens their well being?
