Neuroscience of Addiction Mock Training

This assignment is designed to assess the following course competencies: (CC1)

This week we learned more about the biological and physiological impact of substance abuse and addiction. As you have learned, there are certain parts of the body and brain specifically involved in the chemical changes that occur as a result of substance use.

For this assignment, you are tasked with creating a mock training tool that could be used to teach others about the physiological response to substance abuse. In your demonstration, you should discuss the following:

Identify and describe each of the parts of the body and brain that are connected with addiction and withdrawal (Hint: Neurons, Synapse, Neural Communication, and the specific parts of the brain)

Identify the neurotransmitters involved and explain the role they play in addiction.

Explain the brain’s physiological response to substance use.

Explain the reward circuit and how it is connected to addiction.

Drugs of abuse activate reward circuitry producing reinforcing effects. Chronic use can cause changes in other brain systems involved in learning and memory such as the amygdala, thalamus, prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Describe how these structures adapt to drug abuse.

Your mock training tool will be created using video to demonstrate the key information listed above. You can create a PowerPoint with voiceover or a video of yourself explaining each of the components. Try to incorporate visuals such as a model brain or drawings to further demonstrate the physiological response to substance use.
