write a news story as though it would be published on a local news website. You must gather research from primary sources and conduct your own interviews. Do not quote other news sources. Your story should use the inverted pyramid style and be written for a general audience. It must be accurate, well organized, and use concise language.
You are welcome to choose any newsworthy topic. Given the current pandemic, one suggestion is to write about how a particular group of people are handling quarantine. You might, for example, interview three or four working mothers and try to determine what the range of their experiences suggests. Keep in mind, however, that just stringing together a bunch of quotes is not a news story; there must be a news angle (as we have discussed in class and as you have read in your textbook).
Also remember that you are going to need to interview people, and that’s a time-consuming process. Don’t wait until the last minute. You can start the hunt for people via social media or by phoning friends and family and asking them to help you make connections. You can interview people you know, but don’t limit yourself to them. Identify all sources complete. Although most news organizations allow anonymous sources, this assignment does not.
Your article must include these key elements:
Two headlines, one long (maximum of 94 characters) and one short (maximum of 64 characters);
An inverted pyramid structure;
A lead paragraph;
Active voice throughout;
Accurate facts (including the correct spelling of all proper nouns);
Concise and precise language;
Proper Associated Press style, grammar, word usage, and spelling;
Quotes from at least two interviews with proper attribution of each source by name and job title (or other fact that shows how they related to the story);
The story should be between 400 and 500 words
