The purpose of an ABC narrative / ABC Analysis is to gather data on a challenging behavior and attempt to figure out what the function of the behavior is. An ABC narrative is often used in combination or as an extension of a frequency or time sampling observation. Although the ABC narrative is a type of observation method it is mostly used in a special education setting; it is important for all teachers to be introduced to the method because it can be very beneficial, when attempting to help a child who may be exhibiting some difficult behaviors.
